Move4Health is primarily an expert campaigning organisation working towards making the physical, cultural, political and social environment more conducive for people being active. It also publicises how activity can promote health and wellbeing, tackle the burden of psychological and physical disease, and work towards reducing health inequalities in the UK.

Move4Health is a registered charity. Based in the UK, it is the only dedicated campaigning and public advocacy body solely promoting physical activity. Move4Health is seen as vital to redress the current imbalance between nutrition and physical activity. For too long the importance of promoting physical activity by Government has been neglected. Move4Health has been set up to act as an umbrella organisation for physical activity representation so there is synergy across NGOs and to ensure physical activity remains a priority on the Government's agenda. The aim is to build on the work of other organisations, such as Sustrans, Living Streets, and the BHF's centres and plug the gaps where needed.

Move4Health will be funded by partners that do not compromise the end goal, that is, to enable people to be physically active for the ensuing health gains. Move4Health has been set up with guidance from the National Heart Forum. It is backed by the UK's leading exercise scientists, who provide the foundation upon which the organisation is based. These scientists advocate the need for an electronic discussion forum (or network) so those in the field can regularly update the evidence base when new research is published, which will be reflected in Move4Health's key messages. The scientists will also help design projects undertaken by Move4Health to ensure there is an evidence base for the intervention, or it maximises the potential for adding to or developing an evidence base. The best example for this is designing interventions to promote physical activity and improve productivity in the workplace. Move4Health is currently working with a number of large blue-chip companies.

Move4Health is also backed by practitioners delivering physical activity promotion in the community, who identified a need for national representation. They too advocate the need for an electronic discussion forum (or network) so they can help shape Move4Health's policy positions, projects and campaigns and have constant feedback about national government policy and direction.
